An E91 allegedly has less cubic feet behind the seats than a Sportcross. I would have never guessed. The Bimmer would probably have more upright storage, but geez. How does a proper wagon, fall short of one of the most utility-depraved wagons ever sold?
Obviously, the Bimmer wins with the seats down, as the car is bigger and the backseats have 4" more legroom that the Spertly.
This means nothing, as I’m merely a fan of the E91, not shopping for one. But still, I hope you all enjoyed this useless factoid!

It only measures the space not taken up by the extra throttle position actuators you have to keep on hand at all times.

I was going to say that you seem especially obsessed with cargo space lately, then I saw the tag...

Maybe they used different methods to measure it? I’ve heard about different manufacturers applying different techniques in the past.
Because I agree that the E91 definitely looks bigger/more wagon-like

That does it! Now I am never buying an e91!
Meanwhile, this F31 though
Or if you prefer an almost brand new with 6k miles for under $33K

Less rear seat room in the sportcross, the bmw runs thiccc tyres which need bigger wheelarches, etc?

+ AWD model so higher load floor to clear diff, driveshaft, etc.

All I know is that this is how E90M3 measures cargo space.

How come both your examples are such poor wagons?

Is that a wagon or an interstate bus?

I tell you I absolutely luxuriated in all the cargo room the year we got to drive a Suburban.

Based on fuel economy I’m going with bus. Performance characteristics make both answers confusing.

You can keep saying that until one shows up in your driveway.

How dare you tease us with a photo of a 335 wagon instead of the 328s we received here!
Also, as others have mentioned probably a combination of higher load floor, thicker wheel arches, fancy cladding/walls on the sides to make the load floor rectangular instead of flair out after the wheel arches, steep rake on the roof coming towards the tail end, etc.
Sad really. But WTH our 2014 Crosstrek has 22.3 sq.ft behind the rear seats, and I’ve always wanted an E91 as a dad wagon...but it will have LESS cargo space? Now I’m pissed off too!

I’m just gonna say that I’m a B I G F A N of that second wagon you posted.
